On the last Friday of February, Europe’s leaders watched in pale-faced shock as the President and Vice President of the United States yelled at and humiliated the leader of an invaded country in the Oval Office of the White House. A leader who had travelled to America to relinquish a significant portion of his country’s rare earth metal reserves in exchange for U.S. support.
In the following days, they looked on, even more horrified, as the American president exerted pressure not on the aggressor but on the victim. The better part of Europe has woken up to this and signalled: a turning point has been reached.
However, one of the fundamental principles of geopolitical analysis is that whenever something happens, nothing is more likely to follow than something, and everything remains on the same course. Under Donald Trump, there is still a strong chance that this will be the case on the global stage.
